Idol Worship
In this generation, so many things have been exalted as gods. If God be God, serve Him. If Baal be god, then serve him!
Idolatry
In this generation, so many things have been exalted as gods.Brethren, if God be God, serve Him. If baal be god, then serve him!
Exodus 20:1-6 (Emphasis added)
And God spoke all these words, saying:
2 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.
3 “You shall have no other gods before Me.
4 “You shall not make for yourself a carved image—any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; 5 you shall not bow down to them nor serve them. For I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children to the third and fourth generations of those who hate Me, 6 but showing mercy to thousands, to those who love Me and keep My commandments.
Note: The fact that God says He is jealousy means that whatever will take His place is an abomination .If a job, a spouse, a child, a talent or oneself holds the most precious place and priority in your life, its an idol and out of divine jealousy, it can be totally destroyed. God is not unjust to demand that you have no other life; He is only stating that nothing ought to take His place in our life.
Two words in above passage (Iniquity and Hate ) indicate that idol worship is an iniquity and hatred to God. Adoring and bowing before anything else is a sin and is an indication that hates God. Having anything else that takes the place of God is a sin. Imagine having enmity with the maker! What a risk and danger in life.
Idolatry can be physical or in the heart .Lets think of the worship of items that are visible and later check on idolatry of the heart.
There are actions which people have embraced out of ignorance and sometimes it is because of the beliefs which were engraved in us as we grew up.In days of ignorance God overlooked this but now He is commanding us to repentance.
Apparently, there are some people who walk along with strings round their waists/necks or wrists and they belief it’s a protective gadget from being bewitched or facing a calamity. Others have chosen to carry in their bags/wallets and pocket certain paraphernalia such as small ‘anointing’ oils, leaves, holy water ------- name them.
Idol worship has not started today and lets see the example below of a people who desired to worship what their physical eyes could see and as a result they made a craven image .
Exodus 32:1-35 (Emphasis added)
Now when the people saw that Moses delayed coming down from the mountain, the people gathered together to Aaron, and said to him, “Come, make us gods that shall go before us; for as for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.”
2 And Aaron said to them, “Break off the golden earrings which are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.” 3 So all the people broke off the golden earrings which were in their ears, and brought them to Aaron. 4 And he received the gold from their hand, and he fashioned it with an engraving tool, and made a molded calf.
Then they said, “This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!”
5 So when Aaron saw it, he built an altar before it. And Aaron made a proclamation and said, “Tomorrow is a feast to the Lord.” 6 Then they rose early on the next day, offered burnt offerings, and brought peace offerings; and the people sat down to eat and drink, and rose up to play.
7 And the Lord said to Moses, “Go, get down! For your people whom you brought out of the land of Egypt have corrupted themselves. 8 They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them. They have made themselves a molded calf, and worshiped it and sacrificed to it, and said, ‘This is your god, O Israel, that brought you out of the land of Egypt!’” 9 And the Lord said to Moses, “I have seen this people, and indeed it is a stiff-necked people! 10 Now therefore, let Me alone, that My wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them. And I will make of you a great nation.”
11 Then Moses pleaded with the Lord his God, and said: “Lord, why does Your wrath burn hot against Your people whom You have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? 12 Why should the Egyptians speak, and say, ‘He brought them out to harm them, to kill them in the mountains, and to consume them from the face of the earth’? Turn from Your fierce wrath, and relent from this harm to Your people. 13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Your servants, to whom You swore by Your own self, and said to them, ‘I will multiply your descendants as the stars of heaven; and all this land that I have spoken of I give to your descendants, and they shall inherit it forever.’”[a] 14 So the Lord relented from the harm which He said He would do to His people.
15 And Moses turned and went down from the mountain, and the two tablets of the Testimony were in his hand. The tablets were written on both sides; on the one side and on the other they were written. 16 Now the tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God engraved on the tablets.
17 And when Joshua heard the noise of the people as they shouted, he said to Moses, “There is a noise of war in the camp.”
18 But he said:
“It is not the noise of the shout of victory,
Nor the noise of the cry of defeat,
But the sound of singing I hear.”
19 So it was, as soon as he came near the camp, that he saw the calf and the dancing. So Moses’ anger became hot, and he cast the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain. 20 Then he took the calf which they had made, burned it in the fire, and ground it to powder; and he scattered it on the water and made the children of Israel drink it. 21 And Moses said to Aaron, “What did this people do to you that you have brought so great a sin upon them?”
22 So Aaron said, “Do not let the anger of my lord become hot. You know the people, that they are set on evil. 23 For they said to me, ‘Make us gods that shall go before us; as for this Moses, the man who brought us out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ 24 And I said to them, ‘Whoever has any gold, let them break it off.’ So they gave it to me, and I cast it into the fire, and this calf came out.”
25 Now when Moses saw that the people were unrestrained (for Aaron had not restrained them, to their shame among their enemies), 26 then Moses stood in the entrance of the camp, and said, “Whoever is on the Lord’s side—come to me!” And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together to him. 27 And he said to them, “Thus says the Lord God of Israel: ‘Let every man put his sword on his side, and go in and out from entrance to entrance throughout the camp, and let every man kill his brother, every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.’” 28 So the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses. And about three thousand men of the people fell that day. 29 Then Moses said, “Consecrate yourselves today to the Lord, that He may bestow on you a blessing this day, for every man has opposed his son and his brother.”
30 Now it came to pass on the next day that Moses said to the people, “You have committed a great sin. So now I will go up to the Lord; perhaps I can make atonement for your sin.” 31 Then Moses returned to the Lord and said, “Oh, these people have committed a great sin, and have made for themselves a god of gold! 32 Yet now, if You will forgive their sin—but if not, I pray, blot me out of Your book which You have written.”
33 And the Lord said to Moses, “Whoever has sinned against Me, I will blot him out of My book. 34 Now therefore, go, lead the people to the place of which I have spoken to you. Behold, My Angel shall go before you. Nevertheless, in the day when I visit for punishment, I will visit punishment upon them for their sin.
35 So the Lord plagued the people because of what they did with the calf which Aaron made.
The above text has broad lessons for us.
1. The people felt like Moses had taken so long! This was the beginning of their sudden fall into sin..
What lesson can we draw from this?
Today’s generation has been exposed to instant lifestyle. Instant hot water, instant microwave, instant Mpesa, Instant messaging ------ This has build up a culture that things happen suddenly. Sometimes people imagine they can even move God to act in an instant style. Church, God works with times and seasons. He cannot be manipulated. He is so organized and has good plans already. Jeremiah 29:11.However, sometimes we are made to think that we can twist God to fit into our timings and urgencies. God is God and knows best time. He is never late whatsoever.
Moses stay on the mountain, was an opportunity to learn the heart of the Israelites. Sometimes we make requests to God and if it takes time to physically see results, we start doubting that the miracle will still come though it tallies. May God help us to appreciate that His time is best and we need not opt for alternatives at all.
Failure to wait leads one to traps of solving issues in a very ungodly way. It is also one of the reason people look for alternative things to worship. The children of Israel wanted power and a god they could see, which is the same thing we are witnessing today. People are in search of power and a god they can see, neglecting the true worship of the only true and living God.
2. Aaron was a priest but its strange that he did not stand out to guide the crowd or even to remind them of the true God and what He had done in the past. He needed to tell the people that they needed to worship God and God alone but instead he led them to idol worship .He sought to please people. If you have been called, stand out and be distinct. Seek to please God, not man. The power of God is above all and we cant even think of bowing to an idol.
Every Christian has a responsibility to know what God has said in His word, so as not to be misled or deceived even by a priest.
In Kenya, there are many people who have fallen into the trap of being misled and taken advantage of by false teachers who have fallen from the grace of God. In pursuit for miracles and blessings, people have been deceived to use some items in place of dependency on true God.
I submit to brethren that we arise and seek after the blesser . Seek the God of the blessing, not the blessing. "Seek ye first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all the other things will be added to you" (Matthew 6:33).
This is a wake-up call --- Signs miracles and wonders follow those who belief. Its ridiculous to follow after these things. They are to follow us. Come on saints!
3. There is a reward of not bowing to idols. Think of Shadrack, Misheck and Abednego (Daniel 3) .They chose not to bow to graven images and because God sees all we do He chose to reward them. Be sure that that as long as you serve your God, He shall deliver you. After deliverance comes promotion. It is time for promotion for those who will not bow down to other gods. May we stand for the true God, such that people will only want to worship the only true God .
Idolatry of the heart
Ezekiel 14:1-11(Emphasis added)
Now some of the elders of Israel came to me and sat before me. 2 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 3 “Son of man, these men have set up their idols in their hearts, and put before them that which causes them to stumble into iniquity. Should I let Myself be inquired of at all by them?
4 “Therefore speak to them, and say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Everyone of the house of Israel who sets up his idols in his heart, and puts before him what causes him to stumble into iniquity, and then comes to the prophet, I the Lord will answer him who comes, according to the multitude of his idols, 5 that I may seize the house of Israel by their heart, because they are all estranged from Me by their idols.”’
6 “Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘Thus says the Lord God: “Repent, turn away from your idols, and turn your faces away from all your abominations. 7 For anyone of the house of Israel, or of the strangers who dwell in Israel, who separates himself from Me and sets up his idols in his heart and puts before him what causes him to stumble into iniquity, then comes to a prophet to inquire of him concerning Me, I the Lord will answer him by Myself. 8 I will set My face against that man and make him a sign and a proverb, and I will cut him off from the midst of My people. Then you shall know that I am the Lord.
9 “And if the prophet is induced to speak anything, I the Lord have induced that prophet, and I will stretch out My hand against him and destroy him from among My people Israel. 10 And they shall bear their iniquity; the punishment of the prophet shall be the same as the punishment of the one who inquired, 11 that the house of Israel may no longer stray from Me, nor be profaned anymore with all their transgressions, but that they may be My people and I may be their God,“ says the Lord God.’”
Did you know it is possible to have idols in ones heart?,. If you lift anything in your heart and idolize it, then it is still a god. God turns His face away from people with other gods in their hearts. He is a jealous God. Everything that takes the place of God will be taken away/ cut off from our lives.
Sometimes we tend to warm up to people so much that we fail to distinguish between a person and the power/ gift of God in them. It is okay to appreciate the gift of God in people, but not lifting the gift instead of the God who gave the gift. People tend to lift miracles, instead of the miracle worker. We tend to shift our focus from God to the person performing the miracles. This is what made Israelites to belief Aaron even when he misled them.It is time people look for God, and stop looking for miracle. God Almighty has the power to watch over us. He is the only one who can perform miracles that last. Go after the miracle working God, not the miracles.
The moment we put God first in our lives, we will cause a distinction in our lives. You should allow God to search our hearts and remove any idols from our hearts, leaving only Him highly exalted.
Colossians 1:13-18
13 He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, 14 in whom we have redemption through His blood,[a] the forgiveness of sins.
15 He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn over all creation. 16 For by Him all things were created that are in heaven and that are on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or principalities or powers. All things were created through Him and for Him. 17 And He is before all things, and in Him all things consist. 18 And He is the head of the body, the church, who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead, that in all things He may have the preeminence.
You should not bow down to anything that is lesser than our creator. Let God have the first priority of your time and money.
We should exalt Him and Him alone. When we make Him number one, NOTHING can take His place.
Blessings.
