Secrets of a Blessed Man

Let the Word of God always be your mirror, your map to lead you to your blessings. Though we are blessed through faith in Jesus, we need His Word to show us how to live a blessed life, and enjoy the blessings bestowed upon us.

Psalm 112:1-10
Praise the Lord! Blessed is the man who fears the Lord, who delights greatly in His commandments. 2 His descendants will be mighty on earth; The generation of the upright will be blessed. 3 Wealth and riches will be in his house, and his righteousness endures forever. 4 Unto the upright there arises light in the darkness; He is gracious, and full of compassion, and righteous. 5 A good man deals graciously and lends; He will guide his affairs with discretion. 6 Surely he will never be shaken; The righteous will be in everlasting remembrance. 7 He will not be afraid of evil tidings; His heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord. 8 His heart is established; He will not be afraid, until he sees his desire upon his enemies. 9 He has dispersed abroad, He has given to the poor; His righteousness endures forever; His horn will be exalted with honor. 10 The wicked will see it and be grieved; He will gnash his teeth and melt away; The desire of the wicked shall perish.

From this psalm, let's draw a few lessons on how to enjoy a blessed life.

1. A blessed man fears God (v. 1)

If you want to live a blessed life, you have to fear God. As years have passed, things have changed, from our culture to the way things related. For example, in the days of old, the way people related to their parents and to older people was very different from the way people relate to them today. Sadly, this has trickled down also to the church, when it comes to the fear of the Lord. We need to maintain the fear of the Lord, and not compromise, as God never changes. When we truly fear God, no matter where we go, we will be aware of the fear of the Lord, Who never changes.

It does not matter how much you have, as long as you do not fear God, then will miss out on the true blessings of God. It is only in the fear of God that we will still remember that it is God who has brought you so far.

2. A blessed man brings up his children in the ways of God (v. 2)

A blessed man brings his children up in the ways of God. Not bringing up one’s children in the ways of God short-circuits one when it comes to God’s blessings, such that they do not experience the full package of God’s blessings. Job experienced the blessings of God and remained a blessed man, as he brought up his children in the ways of God, even sacrificing for them often (Job 1). We must bring up our children in the fear of God. We hold the keys to the future, as to whether our children will grow up in the ways of God or not.

3. A blessed man walks in righteousness (v. 3)

For one to experience the blessings of God, they ought to walk in righteousness. We are righteous by faith, and are blessed by faith, but we have to walk in righteousness for us to manifest and enjoy our blessings. There should never come a time that we reminisce the former days when we were close to God, serving Him and so on. We should be growing from one level to another, as far as our walk with God is concerned, never going back or growing slack.

For us to also walk in the ways of God and ways of righteousness, we ought to learn from our mistakes, knowing our weak points and so on. Blessings are the portion of the righteous (Ps. 5:12).

4. A blessed man avoids arrogance (v. 4)

A blessed man is gracious and compassionate, even in his speech. A blessed man’s words do not hurt or even break bones; they heal, bind and bring restoration. A blessed man does not turn his back on needs and brethren who need their help. When you practise walking in grace and compassion, light will be your portion wherever you go, even where there is darkness. Even in darkness, light shines for the upright. Develop a character that is gracious, even in your words.

5. A blessed man conducts his affairs with justice (v. 5)

Since we are blessed, we should exercise justice. We are different from others, since we are blessed, and should never be found compromising or even breaking the laws of the land, such as overlapping on the road. The law of the land may even say something contrary to the Word, but since we are blessed and know the justice of God, we'll never go against the justice of God.

6. A blessed man is remembered forever (v. 6)

What will people say about you? A blessed man sends forth good remembrance and image to others. He lives knowing there are people watching, and wants to draw them to God by the way he lives his life (Matt. 5:16).

7. A blessed man trusts in the Lord (v. 7)

A blessed man is never shaken, nor does he waver in his trust in God. As he continues to walk with God and trust Him, his blessings manifest continually (Jer. 17:7-8).

8. A blessed man does not fear (v. 8)

No matter where a blessed man goes, he never fears, because the Lord is with him.

9. A blessed man is a giver (v. 9)

Just as Jesus is a giver and gave gifts to men after ascending to heaven (Eph. 4:7), a blessed man is a giver. In giving, he gets to enjoy and manifest the blessings bestowed upon his life.

Purpose to enjoy and manifest all the blessings of God bestowed upon your life, as you walk in the Word of God, which is our manual for enjoying a blessed life here on earth.

Blessings.
