Guard the Deposits in Your Heart Entrusted to You by God
O Timothy! Guard what was
committed to your trust, avoiding the profane and idle babblings and
contradictions of what is falsely called knowledge--by professing it some have strayed
concerning the faith. Grace be with you. Amen. 1 Timothy 6:20
This is the activity that I want us to do. Replace the name of Timothy
in this verses with your name and read again, referring now to yourself.
The word "deposits" (committed in your heart) refers to what you
are anointed with by God just like every other believer in the body of Christ. This is what
helps us fulfil our purpose in life.
But you are a chosen
generation, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, His own special people, that you
may proclaim the praises of Him who called you out of darkness into His
marvelous light; 1 Peter 2:9
Regardless of the gift /anointing, we are charged to guard our hearts.
Let us expound the word ‘guard’. Visualise soldiers standing guard at the
entrance of the barracks. They are always alert and ready to strike at any
foreigner who approaches without consent. They don’t give the alien a second
glance upon sensing danger.
In our daily lives, there are always hindrances meant to thwart the
purpose of God in our lives. Is it lust, it is media content, your company, is
it the love of money (1 Timothy 6:10)?
We all know what hindrance is in our lives, but we are also assured of
overcoming:
No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but
God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able,
but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able
to bear it. 1 Corinthians 10:13 (Emphasis added)
Add the word "hindrance" to the word "temptation", since temptations come to hinder us from accomplishing God's purpose. So our first assurance is God always provides a way for every
temptation/hindrance.
So our next question should be, how we get to God?
John 14:6 clearly gives us the answer, that He is the way the truth and the life (the living word of God in flesh
form). It is only through Jesus that we get to our Father, the Author of our life story and the giver of the enabling to accomplish our life purposes.
On to the next question on how to get to Jesus, the answer is simple and
clear:
It is only through faith and confession that we receive Jesus. Once we've received Jesus in our hearts, we've received these "deposits" that will help us accomplish God's purpose on earth, as well as the manual and best example on how to do so, coupled with the ability to do so. All this is wrapped up in Jesus.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was in the beginning with God. 3 All things were made through Him, and without Him nothing was made that was made. 4 In Him was life, and the life was the light of men. John 1:1-4
The word of God came in flesh form (Jesus Christ) and Him being the
light of the world, all things were made through Him. As we meditate on the Word day
and night, we acquaint ourselves with Jesus and become one with Him, thus making our way prosperous and successful. Jesus, being the living Word, is the only Way we can accomplish God's purpose on earth successfully:
This Book of the Law shall not depart from your mouth, but you shall meditate in it day and night, that you may observe to do according to all that is written in it. For then you will make your way prosperous, and then you will have good success. Joshua 1:8.
When faced with temptations, we should always look to Jesus to help us with the temptations and hindrances that threaten to stand in the way of us accomplishing God's purpose on earth:
For in that He Himself has suffered, being tempted, He is able to aid those who are tempted. Hebrews 2:18
By following Christ's example, keeping His Word in our hearts, we get to guard our hearts and the deposits God put in our hearts when we received Christ.
By following Christ's example, keeping His Word in our hearts, we get to guard our hearts and the deposits God put in our hearts when we received Christ.
In conclusion, fellowship
with brethren is also important, as we edify one another in God’s kingdom
Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing. 12 And we urge you, brethren, to recognize those who labor among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves. 14 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all. 15 See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all. 16 Rejoice always...1
Thessalonians 5:11-16
God is love
and His love abides in your heart.
Amen.
