Examine the Condition of Your Soul

We should always be praying over the condition of our souls. Our souls need to be liberated and set free by the Only One who can set free, Jesus Christ. What is the condition of your soul? Is it joyful, peaceful, and quiet or is it fearful, wounded, broken, tormented and so on?

There are three parts of a human being - the body, soul and spirit.

The body is our physical frame. We do all in our power to keep fit. We exercise, eat right, go for regular medical check- up, get enough sleep etc. People are very concerned about their physical fitness these days. You see people going to the gym, exercise classes etc.

People are seen nurturing themselves spiritually. It is not uncommon to see people doing 40 day fasts, 21 day fasts, praying, doing Bible Studies, intercession and other spiritual discipline. Some people are in church everyday praising and lifting up holy hands, holding leadership positions in churches and having all forms of godliness but how does that affect the soul? During these times of prayers, we can ask God to reveal to us the condition of our souls.

Simply put, the soul refers to our emotions, mind, senses, intellect, to our conscious and sub-conscious. It is sad to note that in some of us, there is a disconnect between our spirit-man and our souls.

  • How can we go on spiritual exercises and not find place in our hearts to forgive and release those who have hurt us? Sometimes the one who has hurt us is someone as close as a spouse, sibling, parent or friend?
  • How can we be so ‘spirit-filled’ and yet we harbor bitterness, anger, and resentment?
  • How can we be so spiritual, and yet we engage in immorality, corruption and accept bribes?
  • How do I deal with grieving or loss? Is my soul anchored to Jesus, or to the loss?

My prayer is that our souls would be fully under the subjection of the Holy Spirit. Pray for a divine alignment of your soul (emotions, thoughts, imaginations etc.). We have to grow from just being saved to walking in sanctification. Christ accepted us just as we were but He doesn’t want us to stay as we were.

He accepted us and worked in us to become more like Him.

Galatians 2:20, paraphrased, says, "I am crucified with Christ, my emotions, passions, thoughts etc. have come under the subjection of the Holy Spirit. It is no longer I that lives but Christ that lives in me.’

1 Thessalonians 5:2
‘Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.’

Spiritual maturity goes hand in hand with emotional health, physical health and spiritual health.

2 Corinthians 10:3-5
‘For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. 4 For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, 5 casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ.’

Here we see Paul referring to warfare in the mind: against arrogance, rebellious ideas, negative attitudes, spiritual arrogance and pride. As we pray may we trust God to bring every obedient thought, feeling, emotion under the subjection of Christ and may we experience the freedom of Christ by being set free from those emotions that pull us down or bind us.

We declare, in the name of Jesus, that every negative thought, emotion, attitude, vain imagination is nailed to the cross and we bear it no more. Praise the Lord, praise the Lord for my transformed and redeemed soul.

Will your anchor hold in the storms of life,
When the clouds unfold their wings of strife?
When the strong tides lift and the cables strain,
Will your anchor drift, or firm remain?

Refrain

We have an anchor that keeps the soul
Steadfast and sure while the billows roll,
Fastened to the Rock which cannot move,
Grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love.

I pray that our souls would be grounded firm and deep in the Savior’s love. God help us and stabilize us in His love. Remember, Jesus is the reason for the Season!

In His service for His Glory,
