God Given Authority
The topic of authority is not new particularly to those who have been following our messages for a while. God took us through the same message sometime last year under the topic 'Understanding Authority' on July 9th 2014. Brethren, when you see God lead us to a similar message so soon after, it may be that He is reminding us of something on authority which we may have forgotten or that He wants the same topic shared differently for very divine reasons. I therefore submit to the authority of the Holy Spirit to deliver this message as He leads, for His own glory and honor. It is my prayer that our hearts will be tuned to hear and concentrate on what God wants us to do, and that we will hearken to what He says.
As we talk about authority, it is important for us to understand that this is actually synonymous to power. A person can only receive authority from one who is more superior to him or her. The very first time the Bible records a given authority is in the book of Genesis:
Gen 1:26 -31 (AMP)
God said, Let Us [Father, Son, and Holy Spirit] make mankind in Our image, after Our likeness, and let them have complete authority over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, the [tame] beasts, and over all of the earth, and over everything that creeps upon the earth. 27 So God created man in His own image, in the image and likeness of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 And God blessed them and said to them, Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it [using all its vast resources in the service of God and man]; and have dominion over the fish of the sea, the birds of the air, and over every living creature that moves upon the earth. 29 And God said, See, I have given you every plant yielding seed that is on the face of all the land and every tree with seed in its fruit; you shall have them for food. 30 And to all the animals on the earth and to every bird of the air and to everything that creeps on the ground—to everything in which there is the breath of life—I have given every green plant for food. And it was so. 31 And God saw everything that He had made, and behold, it was very good (suitable, pleasant) and He approved it completely. Of course this was inclusive of man and the authority He had given him. And there was evening and there was morning, a sixth day.
Note that in Genesis 1:26, God made mankind /humankind and gave him complete authority over all the earth. This means that authority was given and is still given by superior one who is in charge or in control of what He wants you to exercise power upon. As Christians, what this means in spiritual perspective, is that since we are in Jesus Christ who is an ultimate authority, then we should never subject ourselves to an authority with lower power than the authority in Jesus Christ our Lord.
Sadly, man lost his position of authority through disobedience to God, as described in Gen 3. But because God is full of love, mercy and grace, He chose to redeem man back to Him through His Son (John 3:16).The redemption or restoration of man meant Jesus, who is God and who also reigned in deity, had to rise from His throne for the sake of mankind. After completing the journey of being born in flesh, living on earth, dying and resurrecting, after He accomplished the will of the Father who sent Him, He then received the position of all authority
Philippians 2:5-11 (AMP)
Let this same attitude and purpose and [humble] mind be in you which was in Christ Jesus: [Let Him be your example in humility:] 6 Who, although being essentially one with God and in the form of God [possessing the fullness of the attributes which make God God], did not think this equality with God was a thing to be eagerly grasped or retained, 7 But stripped Himself [of all privileges and rightful dignity], so as to assume the guise of a servant (slave), in that He became like men and was born a human being. 8 And after He had appeared in human form, He abased and humbled Himself [still further] and carried His obedience to the extreme of death, even the death of the cross! 9 Therefore [because He stooped so low] God has highly exalted Him and has freely bestowed on Him the name that is above every name, 10 That in (at) the name of Jesus every knee should (must) bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 And every tongue [frankly and openly] confess and acknowledge that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father
Ephesians1:17-22 (AMP)
[For I always pray to] the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, that He may grant you a spirit of wisdom and revelation [of insight into mysteries and secrets] in the [deep and intimate] knowledge of Him, 18 By having the eyes of your heart flooded with light, so that you can know and understand the hope to which He has called you, and how rich is His glorious inheritance in the saints (His set-apart ones), 19 And [so that you can know and understand] what is the immeasurable and unlimited and surpassing greatness of His power in and for us who believe, as demonstrated in the working of His mighty strength, 20 Which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His [own] right hand in the heavenly [places], 21 Far above all rule and authority and power and dominion and every name that is named [above every title that can be conferred], not only in this age and in this world, but also in the age and the world which are to come. 22 And He has put all things under His feet and has appointed Him the universal and supreme Head of the church [a headship exercised throughout the church], 23 Which is His body, the fullness of Him Who fills all in all [for in that body lives the full measure of Him Who makes everything complete, and Who fills everything everywhere with Himself].
Matthew 28:18-20 (AMP)
Jesus approached and, breaking the silence, said to them, All authority (all power of rule) in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. 19 Go then and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 Teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you, and behold, I am with you all the days (perpetually, uniformly, and on every occasion), to the [very] close and consummation of the age. Amen (so let it be).
Luke 10:18-19 (AMP)
And He said to them, I saw Satan falling like a lightning (flash) from heaven 19 Behold! I have given you authority and power to trample upon serpents and scorpions, and (physical and mental strength and ability) over all the power that the enemy (possesses); and nothing shall in any way harm you.
Mark 16: 16 -18 (AMP)
And He said to them, Go into all the world and preach and publish openly the good news (the Gospel) to every creature [of the whole human race]. 16 He who believes [who adheres to and trusts in and relies on the Gospel and Him Whom it sets forth] and is baptized will be saved [from the penalty of eternal death]; but he who does not believe [who does not adhere to and trust in and rely on the Gospel and Him Whom it sets forth] will be condemned. 17 And these attesting signs will accompany those who believe: in My name they will drive out demons; they will speak in new languages; 18 They will pick up serpents; and [even] if they drink anything deadly, it will not hurt them; they will lay their hands on the sick, and they will get well
The same authority in Jesus was accorded to us through faith and by believing in Jesus Christ
Revelation 4:10
And have made us kings and priests to our God; And we shall reign on the earth.
Acts 17: 28-29
For in Him we live and move and have our being; as even some of your [own] poets have said, For we are also His offspring. 29 Since then we are God’s offspring, we ought not to suppose that Deity (the Godhead) is like gold or silver or stone, [of the nature of] a representation by human art and imagination, or anything constructed or invented.
It is wrong, disappointing, a waste of time and resources to see born again brothers and sisters accept to live under ruler ship of authority of the evil one, the devil whose power is way far below and nowhere comparable to the power in the Name and Blood of Jesus Christ.
Colossians 2:15 (AMP)
[God] disarmed the principalities and powers that were ranged against us and made a bold display {and} public example of them, in triumphing over them in Him {and} in it [the cross].
I know the prince of this world has ruler ship but it’s not for us who have accepted the Lordship of Jesus Christ in our life. It is for those in his network because Jesus in us came to destroy the works of the devil, meaning Jesus is in authority because for sure He destroyed works of Satan. Let us not give the devil a foothold or a field in our lives, as he also understands authority.
Example of living under rulership of the evil is well said in 1 John 3:8: [But] he who commits sin [who practices evildoing] is of the devil [takes his character from the evil one], for the devil has sinned (violated the divine law) from the beginning. The reason the Son of God was made manifest (visible) was to undo (destroy, loosen, and dissolve) the works the devil [has done]. (AMP)
So as long as you are in Christ Jesus the old is gone and new has come and greater is He that is in you than He that is in the world (I John 4:4). You can’t then go to anyone lower than the one in you, because God is superior to the one who is in the world. As we have earlier said, authority is given by one who is at a higher position. It is not for us to succumb to intentions of the ruler of the world whose assignment is to steal kill and destroy (John 10:10), yet Jesus accords us authority of good intention: He says that He came that we may have {and} enjoy life, and have it in abundance (to the full, till it overflows). (Jn. 10:10b, AMP) SELAH! Pause and think of this.
Here are four main points to ponder
1. All Authority is from God. He has the Supreme, Sovereign and ultimate power over all things. Authority is given by a higher authority with power over what is being charged under you. Civil authority is from God so respect and adhere to authority; pay taxes, and adhere to all the government laws (Romans 13:1-7).
Do you have the authority from the Higher power?
John 1:11-12
You only get the real and meaningful authority or power by believing in Jesus and allowing Him Lordship over your life.
Do you want to live a life of liberty, freedom and release from all forms of bondage? Jesus has all the authority to make this happen in your life because He came to set captives free, to proclaim liberty to the physical and spiritual captives and the opening of the prison and of the eyes to those who are bound (Is. 61:1). Submit to a higher authority and receive the authority of release and liberty, which is one of the things God spoke to us concerning this year 2015, as a year to enjoy liberty in Christ and a release from all bondage.
Jesus has authority over sin(s) and this is an issue many Christians are daily battling with. Jesus was in this world and tempted in all ways, yet He did not sin (Heb. 4:15). He is therefore the only one with both spiritual and moral authority to bestow upon us authority over sin. He Himself overcame sin and death so He rules over them. I pray we will accept to exercise the divine power and authority which has been given to God’s children to overcome all temptations and live lives that are pleasing God. There is enough grace to keep away all wickedness, iniquities and sin. I know and acknowledge God’s grace spares us from destruction of God’s anger/ wrath, yet I appreciate and uphold His call for all believers to live in holiness and righteousness, not taking His grace for granted and presumably crucifying Jesus Christ a second time, if that was possible. Let us exercise our God given authority over sin and over all other things, in the leading of the Holy Spirit.
2. Exercise Authority with responsibility. Indeed every title we /you accept signifies authority and vice versa. Authority comes with responsibility /accountability/obligation. Am careful about titles that men place upon us. I would rather stay 'titleless' than accept titles of men, since I will be expected to meet the obligation of every title I accept. The best title is the one from God because He gives the grace to fulfill the obligations under that title and authority. For example: Let no one call you my wife/husband if you are not yet married, and so on. Think of those recorded in the Word of God as having had titles like:
3. Authority can be lost! Adam lost it. Saul lost it King (1 Samuel 13:14, I Samuel 15-16). Both lost it because of disobedience. Every authority bestowed or given to us has a specific assignment or purpose .This is why authority is guided with set standards /requirements. Gen 2:16-17 helps us to realize that authority has guidelines which one must adhere to.
Jesus Christ is not coming back for a weak church, because the latter church will even have more glory than the former. Every believer must keep away disobedience of all forms. If not, you will have the awareness that Jesus has authority and it is also given to believers, yet you may never operate in it.
One time Jewish exorcists in Acts 19:13-20 (Read) had an encounter with demons, which teaches us that authority is bestowed and must be in line with the will of the source of the authority.
If authority lacks responsibility it becomes ineffective. It’s like a toothless dog. A parent who fails to responsibly take care of his children by loving and providing for them loses his position of authority. If one fails to provide for his family he is worse than a unbeliever (infidel) who performs his obligations in these matters (1 Timothy 5:8).
4. Authority is regained only by grace of God. Refer to the message Sons by Grace taught on 1st February 2015 by teacher Sam Gitonga, to understand how exactly authority comes about, especially for us who are God's sons.
Colossians 3:3
For [as far as this world is concerned] you have died, and your [new, real] life is hidden with Christ in God.
In conclusion, God is calling us to exercise the authority He gave us to do the work He has called us to do.
Speak to your life with authority knowing that your tongue has power of life and death (Proverbs 18:21). Where life is needed, speak and speak life. Speak the word of God which is like fire and like a hammer, which breaks rocks to pieces (Jeremiah 23:28-29)
Tell the world about Jesus. Go ye to the whole world and make disciples of me (Mark 16:15)
Live a life which reflects fullness of Christ. You are an epistle, a letter to be read by the world (2 Corinthians 3:2). The world may not read the Bible, and they read Christians. Be the fragrance that will change the world (2 Corinthians 2:15).
Take your rightful position of authority and reign over the territory around you. In the Name of Jesus, you will cast out demons and speak in new tongues (Mark 16:17-18) e.g a witch, demons, sicknesses etc. should not live in your territory.
Keep overcoming by word of your testimony and Blood of the lamb (Revelation 12:11).
God has the final say, so do not succumb to the wish of our enemy the devil, but in Christ and through Him fearlessly go for the best which will glorify His Name.

John 1:11-12
He came
to that which belonged to Him [to His own—His domain, creation, things,
world], and they who were His own did not receive Him and did not welcome Him. 12 But to as many as did receive and
welcome Him, He gave the authority (power, privilege, right) to become
the children of God, that is, to those who believe in (adhere to, trust
in, and rely on) His name...

- Moses was a leader with responsibility to deliver Israel from captivity
- David had authority over Goliath in the name of the Lord (I Samuel 17:45-47). David knew where his authority was coming from. The authority had a responsibility to finally glorify God. What authority are you having and what responsibility does it have? Are you well utilizing the call of God in your life fully?
