Power of the Tongue

By the blessing of the upright the city is exalted, but it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked. Proverbs 11:11 NKJV

The Bible tells us that life and death is in the power of the tongue (Prov. 18:21). With our tongues we can either release life (God's Word is life - Jn. 6:63) or death (what's contrary to God's Word). The Bible repeatedly tells us that a man will be filled by the fruit of his mouth (Prov. 12:14,13:2,18:20). As believers we have the privilege and authority to use our mouths to ensure there’s life all around us, starting with our lives to the lives of people close to us to our community, church, city, nation, world etc. The Bible in our opening text says that by the blessing of the righteous a city (also applies to our nation) is exalted, and it is overthrown by the mouth of the wicked. The wicked don't need any incentive to speak evil and negative things concerning the nation, as it's in their nature to do so. Jesus said that out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks, and that evil people can't speak good things (Matt. 12:34).

As righteous people we were given hearts of flesh when we accepted Christ and that of stone was taken out (Ez. 36:26). Jesus said you either make the tree good and the fruit will be good, or either make the tree bad and the fruit will be bad (Matt. 12:33). He made our tree good by giving us a new heart, and our fruit should continually be good. We also ought to continue making our tree good by using the same agent that transformed us (God's Word) to cleanse and purify it, thus making the fruit good. Whenever one finds themselves speaking evil and negativity against our nation and community they should check what's in their hearts. Jesus also said that we will give an account for every idle word we speak (Matt. 12:36). By our words we are usually either exalting our city and nation, or overthrowing it. This also applies to the church, as the Bible talks of us as those who've come to mount Zion and the city of the Lord (Heb. 12:22). By our mouths we can either exalt the church or overthrow it. Whenever we speak negativity concerning the church and point fingers at members of the body of Christ we are turning against and are overthrowing the body of Christ. Jesus said that a kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation, and every city divided against itself will not stand (Matt. 12:25).

Reflection:
In your speech are you exalting your city, church and nation or are you overthrowing it and bringing it to desolation? Do you believe that your words are powerful and produce either life or death, blessings or curses? In other words, do you believe what God's Word says about your tongue? If you're constantly producing negativity by your mouth concerning your life, other people's lives, our nation, the church etc., what does this tell you about the contents of our heart? (Out of the abundance of your heart your mouth speaks). Are you making the tree (your heart) good by what you watch, listen to, read, speak etc., or are you making it bad?

Grace and peace to you!
