Audience of One
And whatever you do, do it heartily, as to the Lord and not to men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance; for you serve the Lord Christ. Colossians 3:23-24 NKJV
How would you live your life if it was just you on earth, with God? How would you do things, pray, fellowship with God etc.? When God saved and called us, He called us as individuals, for a personal relationship with Him and for His specific work. He wants us to continue living with our focus on Him, doing all we do as ones who do it for God. Sadly what happens to us is we get to a point where we start doing things to please men, especially when it comes to service in the body of Christ and our day to day jobs. At the end you find our motivation to serve God and do what He has called or enlisted us to do being affected by the approval or feedback of men, in some cases even comparing ourselves with other fellow-workers.
At the end of our race and work we won't stand before our pastors, bosses, colleagues, parents, the government etc. We will all stand before Christ Who called and sent us, and give an account to whether we did what He called us to do and did it the way He wanted us to do it. It's not about just doing things, but doing them the way Christ wants them done, and this is heartily (with all our hearts). Someone said that you don't have to do what you love for you to love what you do; when you love the One Who asked you to do something you will love what you do. We find ourselves doing many things as believers, serving in one area or another in the church, working at a secular job, serving our parents, doing household chores, studying, fellowshipping with God etc. All these and more fall in the category of “whatever” in our opening text, and should be done heartily. We should give 100% of our energy, devotion, mind etc. to whatever we do, not 100% to church service, 20% to studies, 15% to our weekly jobs or businesses, 10% to what we do for our parents etc. It should be 100% for everything we set our hearts and minds to do, to whatever God has asked us to do. That way when we stand before our Lord and Master on the final day we’ll hear, “‘Well done, good and faithful servant; you were faithful over a few things, I will make you ruler over many things. Enter into the joy of your Lord.’” Matthew 25:21 NKJV.
Reflection:
Who or what is your audience? Do you do things for the approval of men, or Christ? Can Christ attest to this? Are there some areas you do things half-heartedly and dragging your feet and others you give all your energy amd heart? Is any of these areas less important to God? How would your life look like if you gave 100% commitment and heart to anything you do?
Grace and peace to you!
