Hold God's Word True

“Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Or what man is there among you who, if his son asks for bread, will give him a stone? ...If you then, being evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask Him!” Matthew 7:7-9, 11 NKJV

If there's a text many believers have struggled believing, me included, it's the above one. Jesus came from the Father and had one of his missions being to reveal the Father, and He told us that if we ask from the Father we shall receive, if we seek we’ll find and if we knock it will be opened for us, and that whoever asks receives, whoever seeks finds and whoever knocks it is opened. The thing that causes us to doubt this text is because probably we've asked for a thing or two and it hasn't happened. Next time we come across that text and are prompted to ask for something that doubt rises. It is at such times that I should resolve that God's Word is true and my interpretation of it and experiences will not render God's Word untrue. At the end it boils down to one thing: do I hold God's Word as true, or not? If I say Jesus is my Saviour and anchor my faith for even eternity on His Words, will I believe all He said is true, or there are some things that aren't true?

Are there some things I’ve asked for and I haven't received physically? Yes, many. Do I believe what Jesus said is true? Yes. Why don't I physically have what I requested for then? I don't have all the answers, but I still resolve to believe His Word is true and will keep acting on it by faith. I still believe many answers are still on the way. Jesus said at the end of the text that God will give good things to those who ask Him much more than humans do for their children. Our assignment is to find out what's good from Him. What's good isn't on the basis of our interpretation, but on His. A child can ask for a razor blade and cry convinced it is good, but it isn't. The same can cry for his father's shaving machine, and though it will be good for them a couple of years from now, it isn't good now. Finding out what's good for us from God is basically finding out His will for us, not just the general will but the specific will as well, for our specific situations (1 Jn. 5:14-15). When we do we should ask in faith, knowing that He said whoever comes to Him must believe that He is and that He is a rewarder of those who diligently seek Him (Heb. 11:6). Let God be true and every man a liar, me included (Rom. 3:3-4). Let His Word be true and every man and situation liar.

Reflection:
Do you believe in Jesus and in His every Word? Do you believe what Matthew 7:7-11 says? Might you have allowed circumstances to make you doubt your Saviour's Words? When asking, how important is it to you to find out God's will and what's good for you from Him?

Grace and peace to you!
