Seeing the Unseen
2 Corinthians 4:18
...while we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
First of all the scripture above sounds a bit ambigous or rather a paradox to our minds because how can you look at something that is unseen?
However, as believers we do not walk by sight, but by faith (2 Cor. 5:7). In other words, faith is our inner eye. Walking does not mean taking steps from one place to another, it means the decisions and choices that we make in our everyday lives that ultimately shape the direction of our lives here on earth. The choice to be happy, to be thankful, to be a blessing to somebody, to laugh and be joyful; all these are the steps that we take in our everyday 'walk' in this life on earth. That is why we ought not to make these 'steps' being guided by our physical eyes, but our Spiritual eyes.
Therefore, we are being encouraged to use the eyes of our hearts. We are being reminded to always view everything in our lives with the spiritual eyes rather than the physical eyes. Why is it important to focus with the inner eyes as we 'walk'? The surest way of missing out on the greater part of God's goodness is by using the physical eyes. Faith will help you to see and keep focusing on the unseen goodness of God, wherever you are (2 Cor. 4:18).
Seeing God's goodness is a choice. As long as God is with you, goodness always exceeds evil and negativity, as God is good, all the time. We should always ask God to reveal to us what He wants us to see, in terms of God's goodness. How we block the fruit of the Spirit from manifesting and us experiencing it in our lives is by using the physical eyes. The goodness of God is always following us; we can choose to miss out and not see His goodness, which is always with us. Whenever God allows you to see something in your life, hang on to it.
The more we use our spiritual eyes the more we will enjoy the abundant life that God has given us through Christ (John 10:10). It is so abundant that the physical eyes can not discern its critical details.
Remember that the goodness of God endures forever (Psalms 52:1) and will follow us all the days of our lives (Psalms 23:6). However, our physical eyes can only focus on the temporary. This is why using the physical eyes is a limitation to seeing the true goodness of our Heavenly Father.
Hardening of our hearts is equivalent to not seeing with our spiritual eyes. The physical hinders the spiritual eyesight and vision. Since God is eternal, all that comes from Him is eternal. If you're ever distracted by anything that is temporary, be ware because it is not eternal, and therefore not of God.
How many things do you miss out on, eternal things, by focusing on what you can see?
Seek Him with your heart, not with your physical eyes. Choose to daily see and dwell on the unseen.
Further Readings and Meditation:
Colossians 3:2
Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth.
Romans 4:17-18
...(as it is written, "I have made you a father of many nations") in the presence of Him whom he believed—God, who gives life to the dead and calls those things which do not exist as though they did; who, contrary to hope, in hope believed, so that he became the father of many nations, according to what was spoken, "So shall your descendants be."
Romans 8:24
For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees?
John 20:29
Jesus said to him, "Thomas, because you have seen Me, you have believed. Blessed are those who have not seen and yet have believed."
Blessings.
